Bowflex 552 Dumbbells Review – Adjustable Dumbbells

Bowflex Adjustable DumbbellsI was looking for a durable, versatile, space efficient and easy-to-use workout system that would allow me to work all the major muscle groups. After looking high and low in all the usual places, I found this set of adjustable dumbbells. The reviews were the best for any set of I could find, and the price was reasonable too.

It’s easy to assume that dumbbells cannot be improved upon. After all, they are nothing more than heavy things you pick up and repeatedly lift. You could do that with a couple of rocks and not spend a dime, right?

Well yes, that’s true. Rocks are cheap and heavy, and if you’re on a very tight budget, or a naturalist, it may be the best route to go.

But, if you want to experience the next evolution in dumbbells, and save yourself a lot of space and a wad of cash, then you may want to consider the Bowflex Selecttech 552 dumbbells. Get the full story here in my Bowflex Selecttech 552 dumbbells review.

What to Look for When Buying Adjustable Dumbbells

In the past, the only thing that set one brand of dumbbells apart from another was durability. So, the best set was usually cast from one solid piece of metal and came in a decent range of weights.

Now, durability combined with versatility, ease of use and space efficiency is the key, and the Bowflex 552 dumbbells set delivers.

1. Durability

These dumbbells are extremely durable. The weights are constructed with metal and coated with a form-fitted molding so the metal pieces do not pinch and clank together. Due to the design that allows for adjusting the weight, they are not meant to be tossed around or dropped after a workout, but the sturdy metal components will take a thorough beating.

2. Versatility

The Bowflex Selecttech 552 adjustable dumbbells set replaces 15 normal sets of dumbbells, or a total of 30 dumbbells. How do they do that, you ask?

These dumbbells are adjustable step-by-step from 5 lbs up to 52.5 lbs, but that isn’t even the impressive part. The weight can also be adjusted in increments of 2.5 lbs. up through the first 25 lbs. of weight – so between 5 lbs. and 25 lbs. there are 9 different weight settings (and 15 total settings).

Need a set of dumbbells that weighs 12.5 lbs.? The Bowflex 552 Selecttech dumbbells set literally makes it a snap with their quick and easy dial design.

This makes these dumbbells an impressive buy for people who are interested in making incremental adjustments to their weight-training regimen to increase strength over time without damaging muscles or placing strain on the back.

3. Space Efficiency

There’s no question that these dumbbells are major space savers. Even one set of standard dumbbells takes up an amazing amount of room as they are heavy and bulky, and make any room a mess unless they are properly racked. Not so with the Bowflex Select…

The Bowflex 552 dumbbells come with one base plate for each dumbbell, and all unused plates rest easily in this compact base when they are not being used on the dumbbell. Once you are finished using the dumbbells, they too, can be set in the base plate and stored out of sight.

Of course, if you’d prefer to put your dumbbells on display or keep them arranged for quick and easy access at all times, Bowflex also offers the Selecttech 2-in-1 Stand for your convenience.

How Do The Bowflex 552 Dumbbells Work?

Each dial dumbbell is fitted with the max amount of weight (52.5 lbs.) to start. You only have to turn one of two dials located at either end of the dumbbell to set the weight that you want. Once you have turned it to the desired number, the dumbbell locks only those weights in place.

When you lift the weight out of the base plate – voila! The unneeded weights remain seated in the base plate and you will have the exact weight you need right in your hand. Once you are finished, you simply put the weight back on the base plate, where you can then immediately readjust to a new weight.

The dumbbell securely locks the plates in place each time.
